The Department of Revenue is looking for a self-motivated individual to provide leadership and direction to staff in our Customer Service, Taxpayer Assistance Unit. The position location is Milwaukee.
Position Summary
This position acts as a lead worker that is responsible for performing the most complex front counter activities and functioning as a lead worker for various front counter staff throughout the state. This position is responsible for work related to the management of district office front counter operations including preparing staffing schedules, reviewing staff work, providing in-person assistance to customers, processing payments, balancing cash registers, performing cash drawer audits and educating taxpayers and department staff. This position is primarily responsible for answering the most difficult questions about individual income tax, sales tax, employer withholding, related tax credits, and working with customers who owe back taxes or statewide debt.
The position will provide training in a variety of tax areas for customer assistance and use of tax systems to front counter staff. The work involves extensive in person with some phone contact (inbound and outbound) which requires independent judgement and decision-making ability with a broad knowledge of all tax compliance. This list is illustrative and not all inclusive. The work is performed under general supervision of the Taxpayer Assistance supervisor.

Salary Information
Starting salary will be between $ 26.87/hour and $36.72/hour per hour depending on experience and qualifications. Current state employee pay will be based on the rules of the State Compensation Plan. A 12-month probationary period may be required. This classification is in pay schedule/pay range 07-03. A twelve-month probationary period may be required.
Job Details
The department will conduct a criminal background check, fingerprint check and tax compliance check on all finalists.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified candidates will have each of the following:
- Experience providing customer service by phone, in writing and/or in person
- Experience explaining complex information
- Experience handling difficult or escalated customers in-person interactions
- Experience working with policy, procedure, laws and/or regulations.
Well-qualified candidates will have all of the above plus 2 of the following:
- Experience working with lottery and/or tax laws (e.g., income, sales, withholding, excise)
- Experience approving and/or reviewing work for quality
- Experience leading teams or projects
- Mentoring/Training experience
