Argus Leader, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Tuesday, Jan. 31, 1995 3D OBITUARIES FOR THE RECORD SIOUX FALLS Gerald Waack Gerald G. Waack, 51, an accoun- Gerald Waack tant, of Sioux Falls, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 1995, at McKennan Hospital from cancer. Mr.

Waack was born March 31, 1943, in Kadoka. He attended rural school in Norris, and moved with his family to Kadoka in 1957. He graduated from high Kadoka in Gerald school in 1961, Waack and then attended National College of Business in Rapid City for two years. He then worked at First National Bank in Rapid City for six months. He enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in San Diego, Calif.

He then attended school in San Diego and San Francisco, where he studied electronics and radar for one year. He then served on the U.S.S. Dale in the Pacific during the Vietnam War. He also served as a radar operator for the next three years of his duty. After his discharge he returned to Rapid City, where he continued to attend National College.

He graduated with a degree in accounting in May 1970. He married Barbara Harder on June 1 12, 1977, in Sioux Falls. He worked as an accountant for 15 years at Doherty-Carmody Co. CPA in Sioux Falls. He then opened Gerald Waack CPA in 1985, and Paul Vander Woude joined him in his accounting firm in 1986.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he held many offices; Crooks Gun Club, where he currently served as treasurer; Brandon Optimists where he held many offices; Sioux Falls Balloon Association; and the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Jennifer Waack of Sioux Falls; two stepsons: Brian Harder of Groton; and Corey Harder of Spokane, one step-granddaughter; his parents, Gerhardt and Alma Waack of Sioux Falls; two brothers: Eugene and Duane, both of Sioux Falls; and two sisters: Louise Pederson of Hettinger, N.D.; and Janet Drury of Sturgis. Services will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon today at George Boom Funeral Home, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m.

STATE Lucille Houlihan MITCHELL Lucille R. Houlihan, 79, a former telephone operator, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 1995, at Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Lucille Cleveland was born Feb. 24, 1915, in Armour.

She worked as a telephone operator for Dakota Central and Northwestern Bell Telephone Company from 1930 to 1948. She married N.J. Houlihan on April 6, 1948, in Platte. He died in 1975. She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church; Catholic Daughters of America, where she served as grand regent in 1957; Sojourners Bridge Club; American Legion; and VFW Auxiliaries.

She is survived by two sons: J. Patrick of Burnsville, and Michael E. of Mitchell; two daughters: Rosemary Houlihan of Los Gatos, and Margaret Quarles of Kansas City, eight grandchildren; and five greatgrandchildren. Services will begin at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell, with burial at Platte Cemetery in Platte.

28, 1995, at the Tripp Good Samaritan Center. Hulda Bietz was born July 25, 1904, in Douglas County, north of Delmont. She married Edgar Brosz on Jan. 29, 1928, north of Delmont. He died July 31, 1993.

They farmed north of Tripp for several years. They then moved to the Delmont area, where they farmed until 1956, and moved into Delmont. She entered the Tripp Good Samaritan Center in February 1993. She is survived by one son, Gilbert of Delmont; two daughters: Gloria Kurtz of Delmont; and Rosella Fecteau of Falls Church, seven grandchildren; 15 greatgrandchildren; and one sister, Erna Brosz of Delmont. Services will begin at 1:30 p.m.

TUCKER Argus Leader Staff FLANDREAU -For a hobby, Einer A. Sorenson turned ordistones into family heirlooms. Sorenson spent five years working with a grinding wheel to make jewelry, brooches and bolo ties for his family and friends. Sorenson, 86, died Monday, Jan. 30, 1995, in Riverview Manor in Flandreau.

"He made a lot of pieces, but I think he gave just about everything away," said Sorenson's son, Monte of Salt Lake City, Utah. "We all have some of it. It has sentimental value." Sorenson became interested in his jewelry-making hobby through working in the outdoors and from his son. "I'm a geologist," Monte Sorenson said. "I used to bring rock specimens back from the field and he may have got interested from that." Sorenson stopped making jewelry several years ago.

He was born April 20, 1908, on a farm in rural Trent. He attended school in Trent and farmed with his father until his Clifford Vickerman CANTON Clifford Earl Vick- erman, 85, a retired bank president, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 1995, at the Canton-Inwood Hospital in Canton. Mr. Vickerman was born Sept.

4, 1909, in Fairmont, Minn. The family moved to Canton in 1925. He graduated from Canton High School in 1927, Clifford and attended Vickerman Sioux Falls College and Madison Business College in Wisconsin. He and his parents operated Vick's Cafe and the Lee Hotel in Canton in the early 1930s. When the new Canton Public Library was planned, he donated the old hotel building to the library board.

He married Eva M. Carlson on Oct. 31, 1936, near Canton. He managed First Federal Savings and Loan in the early 1960s, where he served as president and was a member of the board until his retirement in 1985. He also served as president of North and South Dakota Savings and Loan Association, and was a member of the regional advisory board of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board.

He was a longtime member of the Canton Rotary Club; Canton Development Corporation; 32nd degree mason; past master of Silver Star Lodge; Yankton Consistory; El Riad Shrine; Gate City Chapter; Order of the Eastern Star; and was worthy grand patron of the South Dakota OES in 1961. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons: John C. of Maryland; Thomas R. of Pierre; and Paul C. of Omaha, one daughter, Mrs.

Dennis (Glenann) Hanson of Tucson, 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Canton, with burial at Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m.

Masonic rites will begin at 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. John Milton VERMILLION Dr. John R. Milton, 70, professor of English at the University of South Dakota, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan.

28, 1995, in Vermillion from a heart attack. Dr. Milton was born May 24, 1924, in Anoka, Minn. He grew up in St. Paul, Minn.

He served in the Army Signal Corps from 1943 to 1946, and received a battle star and presidential unit citation from the Okinawa campaign. He married Lynn Hinderlie on Aug. 3, 1946, in St. Paul. He earned a bachelor of arts and a master of arts degree from the University of Minnesota, and completed his doctorate in American literature and creative writing at the University of Denver in 1961.

He taught at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, and was the chairman of the department of English at Jamestown College, N.D. He became the University of South Dakota department of English chairman in 1963. Shortly thereafter, he began the quarterly literary magazine The South Dakota Review. After he served as the English department chairman for two years, he continued his career with the magazine, and also in teaching and his own writing. He was also the coordinator of creative writing at USD.

Among his many, publications are "This Lonely House," "The Novel of the American West," "The marriage. He married Anna Broun on Feb. 16, 1933, in Flandreau. She died April 15, 1975. He managed the Flandreau Co-op Creamery for many years and then worked for the Moody County Highway Department until his retirement.

He became a resident of Riverview Manor on Jan. 31, 1992. He was a member of Sts. Simon and Jude Catholic Church, the Flandreau Fire Department, and was a Boy Scout leader. In addition to his son, survivors include two additional children: Ronald of Canova; and Donna Clarkin of LaCrosse, six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Everett of Pipestone, Minn.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Sts. Simon and Jude Catholic Church in Flandreau, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today in Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Nanci of Sausalito, three brothers: David of Austin, Texas; Roy of Potomac, and Donald of Nunica, and one sister, Alice Carlson of Springfield, Va. Memorial services will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion.

ONIDA Arthur John Owens 58, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 1995, in St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre. Mr. was born July 23, 1936, in Pierre.

He attended school in Onida and Pierre. He attended high school and college at Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Mo. He worked with his father in the Onida bank. He retired from the bank in 1990. He served in the South Dakota National Guard and was called into active duty and served during the Berlin Crisis.

He then returned to the bank. He married Carol M. Mettler on Oct. 20, 1962. He was a member of the South Dakota Independent Community Bankers Association, where he served as president in 1988; the South Dakota Bankers Association; the South Dakota Independent Insurance Agents Association; the Sully County Community Theater; and served a as a Eucharistic minister and CCD teacher for St.

Pius Catholic Church in Onida. In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Jeffrey of Sioux Falls; one daughter, Jennifer Owens of Onida; three grandchildren; his mother, Louise Owens of Dallas, Texas; one brother, Michael of Onida; and three sisters: Georgia Fry of Dallas, Texas; Barbara Sarboraria of Livermore, and Margaret Rath of Albuquerque, N.M. Services will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Pius Catholic Church in Onida, with burial beginning at 11:30 a.m.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to St. Pius Catholic Church. Frank Crowther WORTHING Frank 0. Crowther, 80, a retired John Morrell and Company employee, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 1995, at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Mr. Crowther was born Nov. 1, 1914, in Sioux Falls. He grew up and attended schools in Sioux Falls. He then worked for Skougs Candy for 10 years, and later Factory worked at John Morrell and Company.

He married Kathleen Donahue July 6, 1938. She died in 1982. He on served in the Navy for years. After his discharge he returned to Sioux Falls, where he continued to work at Morrell's. He worked in the maintenance department for 40 years, and retired in 1977.

He was a member of the American Legion in Worthing. He is survived by one stepdaughter, Ellen Vaska of Sioux Falls; and one step-grandson. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home, with burial at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon today at the funeral home, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Anthony Dempsey, 66, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died Thursday, Jan. 26, 1995, Sister Anthony Dempsey dent High School. She then attended Notre Dame Junior College in Mitchell, and Presentation Junior College and Northern State Teacher's College, both in Aberdeen. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from Loretto Heights College in Denver, in 1961. She later earned a master of arts degree in drama from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in 1969.

She entered Presentation Convent on May 1, 1947, and made her profession to the Presentation congregation on Aug. 10, 1949. She served in the Presentation Sisters' Education Ministry, and was a teacher at the three Catholic parish schools in South Dakota: Sacred Heart in Aberdeen; St. Thomas in Madison; and St. Teresa in Huron.

She had also taught in Anoka, Minn. She spent 21 years as a teacher and administrator at Presentation College in Aberdeen. She taught she English and served as Dean of Students for the college from 1964 to 1982. She spent her last years in prayer at Mother Joseph Manor. She was involved in community and regional service, and was a member of the Right to Life committees for both the city of Aberdeen and the state of South Dakota.

She was also active in the North Central Region of South Dakota Personnel and Guidance and the South Dakota Personnel Association. She is survived by her mother, Elsie White; one brother, William of Brookings; and four sisters: Joan Dempsey of San Francisco, Irene Steinmeyer and Rosemary Wethington, both of Denver, and Patricia Larson of Brooklyn Park, Minn. Services were held Monday at Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Presentation Heights in Aberdeen, with burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
